It’s Mid-Autumn Festival and that means it’s time for mooncakes!

The Mid-Autumn Festival has over 3,000 years of history, originating from ancient Chinese moon worship practices and harvest celebrations. It became an official holiday during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and is now one of China's major festivals.

If you're plant-based in Hong Kong, chances are you've already heard of Here - the east-side offshoot of the beloved Years. Tucked into quiet corner of Quarry Bay / Taikoo, this spot has become my weekly ritual, and honestly, choosing a photo to post each time is getting harder than picking what to eat.

City Super Deli in Hong Kong isn't a fully vegan destination, but it does offer a few reliably tasty plant-based deli items that are perfect for a quick lunch or snack. 

The Hong Kong Vegetarian Expo once again brought together an incredible mix of plant-based innovation, cultural flavours, and eco-conscious living. We scoped out the place for the best vegan dishes and products on offer. 

Here follows a quick round-up of some of the best vegan places to visit in Hong Kong!

Hidden in the heart of Wan Chai, within the historic Blue House, you will find this little gem called Lisa's Veggie - a humble, no frills vegetarian eatery offering home-style Chinese vegetarian cuisine in a setting steeped in culture and character. Don't fret! Vegan dishes are clearly labelled.

Yuan by Lubuds is a fine-dining vegan restaurant located in the heart of Central, Hong Kong, offering a sophisticated plant-based culinary experience. 

f you're looking for a spot to relax after browsing and buying books at Eslite Bookstore, Hysan Place, Habitu is a good choice as it is accessible from the bookstore. Offering a mix of wholesome food and unique drinks, this cafe provides a serene escape from the busy Causeway Bay area. Among their offerings, the beetroot latte and kale salad stand out as some of the only vegan options they have.

Nestled in the historic Blue House in Wan Chai, Wanaka offers a delightful vegan dining experience that is both unique and refreshing. The Blue House itself is a heritage building with a rich history, dating back to the 1920's. It has been beautifully preserved and now serves as a cultural landmark, adding a touch of historical charm to the dining experience. 

Nestled in the vibrant district of Wong Chuk Hang, Africa Coffe and Tea (ACT) offers a unique culinary experience that transports you straight to Africa. This cozy cafe and bar is not just a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea; it's a celebration of African culture and flavours, with strong emphasis on sustainability and community support.

Root Vegan in Central, Hong Kong is a great spot for anyone looking to enjoy delicious vegan food. Located on Wellington street, this upper-floor cafe offers a cozy and modern industrial ambiance, perfect for casual meals. With both indoor and outdoor seating makes it a great spot for lunch breaks or relaxed dinner.

One of my favourite restaurants to visit in Hong Kong, is Veggie Express. Nestled away in the busy suburb of North Point, it never disappoints. This restaurant is a testament to the versatility of vegetarian cooking. And for those of us who choose not to eat animals, we can still get the opportunity to experience traditional Hong Kong flavours in a vegetarian setting. The menu is clearly marked with which dishes contain eggs and dairy, so it is easy to navigate if you are a vegan. 

Kung Tak Lam Shanghai Cuisine in Causeway Bay offers a unique dining experience for those seeking vegetarian or vegan cuisine. The restaurant has existed for more than 30 years and has garnered attention for its commitment to Shanghainese vegetarian stir-fry dishes.

Nestled in the vibrant neighbourhoods of Shek Tong Tsui and Robinson road in Midlevels, Southlane stands out as a cafe for health conscious foodies. These quaint cafes exude a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely brunch or a cozy afternoon retreat. Having visited both branches, the one in Robinson road delivers exceptional service but the food quality is the same

The dim sum at Lock Cha Teahouse is truly a treat for the taste buds. Each dish is expertly crafted with attention to detail and a focus on using high-quality ingredients. The flavors are authentic and well-balanced, showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs. Whether you're a fan of traditional favourites like steamed dumplings and siu mai, or more adventurous dishes like black truffle buns, there is something to satisfy every palate. And the best is ... it's all vegan or vegetarian!

I sincerely wish we could take more care of our planet, there is so much beauty in it and climate change (caused by us) is threatening it all. Spending time in nature is one of the most awesome ways of reconnecting and understanding that we are living on this earth with other living things. We are not here to dominate everything.

Strolling through the busy Electric road packed with restaurants to choose from, arguably the best choice is Campers. Campers has been a favourite in Quarry Bay and Tin Hau for their delicious food and great prices for more than twenty years. 

Veggie SF states that it is a vegetarian restaurant on their website, but when you call them they say they are vegan. Perhaps it is advisable to check if everything is vegan before you order if you have allergies or dietary specifications. They serve internationally inspired cuisine with a mixed theme of fabulous 50's and San Francisco.
