Plant A Seed Vegan, Bayan Lepas, Penang — Japanese Fusion Plant-Based Dining Done Beautifully

Tucked into the Arena Curve area of Bayan Lepas, Plant A Seed Vegan is one of Penang's most stylish plant-based dining destinations. This was the last stop on our trip in Malaysia and we went for lunch on our way to the airport. It buzzed with energy. Every table was filled with diners who clearly knew that this is the place to be. The interior set the tone immediately: teal feature walls, wooden slatted ceilings, warm pendant lighting and a glowing neon sign confirm this is somewhere that takes both design and food seriously. From the get-go the service was excellent and it continued right to the end.

The temaki hand rolls were a standout opener — elegantly presented nori cones, one loaded with edamame and creamy filling, another crowned with crispy toppings and a delicate vegan tobiko-style garnish. Light, fresh and genuinely impressive. The inari tofu pockets were equally beautiful — plump golden pouches topped with crispy floss and vegan mayo, served on a dark slate plate. Simple, satisfying and dangerously moreish. The fried tempura tofu bites delivered on texture — golden and crisp, served over shredded cabbage with chilli flakes, proving that plant-based finger food can be every bit as crowd-pleasing as the original. The black sauce stir-fried noodles tied everything together — thick, glossy noodles tossed with broccoli, mushrooms and vegetables in a deeply savoury sauce. Hearty and boldly seasoned. Beautifully presented kombucha in a copper martini glass rounded out the experience with style.

Malaysia is an incredible destination if you are plant-based!
