Review: Brown Poodle Cafe

When I googled plant-based restaurants to visit during our trip to Malaysia I thought Brown Poodle was quite a weird name for a restaurant, but you know vegans love animals so might as well give it a try. Tucked away in Tanjung Tokong, Brown Poodle Cafe announces itself with effortless charm: a glowing arched neon sign, rattan furniture, and their signature fluffy white poodle sculpture greeting you at the entrance. The neon wall quote "Be the change you wish to see in the world" sets the tone perfectly for what this 100% vegan cafe stands for.

First we had the Truffle Mushroom Pizza. Generously topped with shaved black truffle and melted vegan cheese, this was the undisputed showstopper of the meal. Earthy, indulgent and deeply satisfying — the kind of dish that makes you forget entirely that it's plant-based. I can never say no to a Green Pesto Pasta. It arrived loaded with fresh greens and cherry tomatoes. Herbaceous, light yet filling, a confident dish that did not disappoint. For drinks we had two beautifully bottled ÜNIIQ kombuchas complemented the meal wonderfully. It was refreshing, lightly fizzy and the perfect plant-based pairing. I honestly do not know what I would do if the world ran out of kombucha. Vegan desserts are usually a bit of a disappointment but we decided to go all out and ordered the dark chocolate cake. A dramatic, almost jet-black cake topped with crumble and served with a fresh strawberry. Rich without being overwhelming — the perfect sweet ending.

Verdict: 9/10

Brown Poodle proves that plant-based dining in Penang has truly levelled up. Stunning ambience, creative menu and food that genuinely delivers on flavour. Don't miss it.
